Smriti had everything she had set out to manifest: a law career in England, good money, freedom. Then, alone in her bathroom with a handful of pills, she cried out to a God she didn’t know. In this episode of God’s Truth Podcast, the former Hindu lawyer from New Delhi shares how Jesus answered her with five words: “Daughter, repent for your sins.”
Raised between two religions
Smriti grew up in New Delhi with a Hindu father and a Sikh mother, and she practised both faiths wholeheartedly. She went to the temples, kept the rituals and observed the fasts, offering milk, flowers, fruit, turmeric and salt at the altars of the idols.
Yet the deeper she went, the more confused she became. Hinduism gave her a god for fertility, a god for money and a god for marriage, but no answer to the question that burned in her: who judges us, and on what basis? Karma and seven lives of reincarnation felt like a loop with no exit. Sikhism taught her to do good works and give generously, but she was still lying, drinking and gossiping. Buddhism only added to her questions.
Looking back, she believes those years of fasting, meditation and ritual were opening spiritual doors she didn’t know existed.
Manifesting the perfect life
Then came the New Age. Manifestation promised she could create her own reality, and for a while it seemed to work. She moved to England for a master’s in law, became a lawyer, and filled her life with nights out, holidays and designer brands. She went deeper still, into the seven chakras, the third eye and new moon rituals.
None of it touched the emptiness. “I had everything,” she says, “but still it was like I was still broken.”
Doors to the dark side
Smriti’s encounters with darkness started young. At nine or ten, she saw the Angel of Death, known in Hinduism as Yamraj, standing at her bedroom door: a towering, hooded figure dressed in black, with dark eyes and an axe in his hand. She says the Lord later showed her that a spirit of death had followed her for years, through several accidents that nearly took her life while she practised law in Delhi.
In England, her fascination with the occult grew. After smoking cannabis one night, she saw what looked like a dark oval portal opening at her door. In clubs, she would see a dark shadow approach before the person it was attached to.
The man sent to capture her soul
Then she met a man on a dating app. He ghosted her for days, called only when he wanted her, and still she couldn’t pull away. She now believes he was on an assignment from the kingdom of darkness, and that a witch he visited was casting spells over her.
One day at work, typing notes for an important meeting, she felt her soul leave her body and heard a voice calling her name in the dark. A colleague shook her, and she felt it return.
“Daughter, repent for your sins”
On 12 October 2023, overwhelmed and depressed, Smriti took enough pills into her bathroom to end her life. She looked up and prayed: “God, whoever you are, I’m going to kill myself today.” She planned to come back in her next life and worship Him.
Instead she began to shake and sweat. Then came a voice, calm and full of authority, like a father speaking to his child: “Daughter, repent for your sins.” It told her to kneel on her bed and bow her head. She had no idea what sin or repentance meant, so she searched for them online. For the first time, the curious child who had asked questions all her life had answers.
A week earlier, without explanation, her YouTube feed had shifted from pop music to Psalm 91, the Lord’s Prayer and worship songs.
Six months alone with God
What followed was six months of what Smriti describes as supernatural deliverance. She fasted for 40 days. Worship music washed out the songs that had shaped her. The Lord walked her through old wounds, including abuse she suffered as a child, and told her to forgive.
When she told her Sikh mother, the answer was a plane ticket home and fear of what conversion would cost the family. So she stepped away from almost everyone she knew and let God work. After four months, she felt led to a nearby church to get a Bible. She read the whole New Testament in three months.
“I am Jesus”
About six weeks after that night, Smriti stood at her window and asked, like a child, “Who are you?” She heard: “I am who I am.” Still unsure, she asked again. This time the answer was clear: “I am Jesus.”
She hadn’t yet read Exodus. She didn’t know those words were already written.
Chakras, the third eye and two rapture dreams
In the second half of the episode, Smriti speaks openly about the Hindu roots of New Age practice, from the seven chakras to the third eye, which she believes opens a portal to demonic spirits rather than spiritual insight.
She also shares two dreams of the rapture. In one, she rises to meet Jesus while two Muslim friends are left behind. In the other, one of her brothers stands beside her while the other is stuck behind a gate. In both, she says, the ones left behind were held back by unbelief. Abigail shares an end-times dream of her own, and Smriti closes the episode in prayer.
